It always takes a while for all the data to be collected and analysed. The on the official controls carried out on the application of food and feed law and the regulations on animal health, animal welfare, plant health and plant protection products is now available.
The national authorities are responsible for carrying out official controls. In 2022, there were 16.4 million farms in the EU, of which 5 million were inspected. Around 1.2 million infringements were detected, 475,000 of which led to sanctions. A total of 12,182 criminal proceedings were initiated.
842,000 checks were carried out on food producers, during which 154,000 offences were detected. This is the third highest number after food wholesale and retail and catering.
